Frequently Asked Questions

1

My child is neurodivergent. Will this work for them?

+

Absolutely! This programme is specially designed for neuro-diverse young people. We do have other pathways for self-harm and other diagnoses.

However, as a large proportion of our support is around verbal communication, if your young person is non-verbal this programme may be less relevant to you and your family.

2

Do you provide treatment for my child or is this just for me?

+

Right now, Speek only works with parents and not the young people directly. Our Programme has been clinically developed for parents with skills, tools and knowledge that equips them to then support their young person. However, we are working towards being able to also work with young people! We will update all of our Speek Parents as well as information on our website when that’s the case.

3

Can I speak with a clinician 1-1?

+

Yes! We understand groups are not for everyone. Hence, we offer a Standard+ plan for parents that prefer more individualised support at this point.

4

Can my partner/co-parent also sign up?

+

Yes! We know it’s not always possible for both parents to participate with Speek. However, where possible, we highly recommend both parents sign up as that can help the young person feel more supported by both parents. It can also make it easier for parents to approach conversations and decisions around parenting the young person who is self-harming as well as help ensure better family cohesion. There is no additional cost for the second parent!

5

Can I join if I’m not a parent?

+

The Speek Programme has been designed for parents or caregivers which could include, as an example: foster parents or grandparents. The Speek Programme will be most relevant to and is most likely to have an effect on caregivers who have regular contact with the young person.

6

Who is the Speek Programme not recommended for?

+

The Speek neuro-diversity programme is specifically designed for parents/carers of young people with challenging behaviours, with a suspected or confirmed diagnosis.

The Speek Programme may not be suitable for parents of young people who:
– Are non-verbal
– Have no/limited contact with their parents
– Have an active eating disorder
– Have an active psychotic disorder
– Have an active dissociative disorder

parents who are going through the same challenges and sharing their experiences have joined the Speek community.
